As I mentioned at the bootcamp last night, I had a look at the quality of the resumes uploaded onto the Summer of Code. Out of 10 resumes that I looked at, only 2 were OK. The rest ranged from Poor to Appalling!
Let me re-iterate : The #1 comment from employers is that the resumes are so bad they don’t know what you can do for them !
To recap – Your resume should contain:
- 1 page resume that tells who you are, what you’re interested in, what skills do you have and where you have applied them with what result.
- Technical summary – This is a one page summary that tells me what technical stuff you have done and to what level of experience.
- Qualifications / Grades - Put your grade transcript here.
- References – Put information about your references here.
So what does a good resume look like
Here is an outline of what your resume should actually look like. Its been broken into 4 sections.

Here is an example from a real resume that shows the what not to do in explaining what you’re good at.
Programming
I am proficient at programming in Java and I also have experience in C and Python and I am interested in furthering these skills.
BAD BAD BAD!
This did not tell how he got proficient in Java or what objectives it helped achieve! FAIL
Programming Skills
During the last 2 years at university, I have completed a number of programming projects using Java. During this time I was able to learn about design patterns and apply that knowledge to my projects. While learning programming I have complete work on the following topics: created a turn base RPG Game, defined the rules to play a game of chess and implemented different tree data structures.
Remember you will be expected to talk about what you have done in interview, so if you bullshit then you going to be stuck !
Resume example
Michael Knight aka Mr Knight rider shared his resume to show how you can write a resume to show what you’re good at! The resume shows something about Michael, what skills he has done, what he achieved and with what result!
