What is Summer of Code?

The Summer of Code (SoC) is a programme to help connect students with innovative Wellington ICT companies during the summer holidays. The SoC is comprised of two parts:

  1. Summer of Code internship programme: We help connect smart, young Computer Science / Engineering students (2nd-4th year) from Victoria and Massey Universities with participating companies to work on research and development projects for these respective companies. The students have a range of skills in .NET, C/C++, Java, SQL and HTML.
  2. Summer of Code Seminar series: We provide seminars on a range of technical, business, and career development seminars from some of the top minds that Wellington and the world has to offer. Last summer, we had Rod Drury (Xero), Nat Torkington (O’Reilly), Rowan Simpson & Paul Gold (Trade Me), Milton Ngan (Weta), John Clegg & Tomek Piatek (ProjectX), Stephen Cheng (Innaworks), Sam Ng and Hayden Vink on interaction design and usability, and many others shared their knowledge with our students.

Why should your company be a part of the Summer of Code?

We help to streamline the process of attracting and matching students for summer internships from November to February each year. If your company is looking to find students to help work on your research projects then we can help you make it a reality. We work with Foundation for Research Science and Technology to help the companies gain funding for their projects. FRST will fund up to $14 p/h per student for approved R&D projects.
Benefits of being a part of Summer of Code:

  • Relationships:
    • SoC has strong relationships with Victoria and Massey Universities.
    • SoC has strong relationships and funding track record with FRST to sponsor students.
  • Streamlined process:
    • SoC has a testing and interview process to manage a large numbers of applicants.
  • Training:
    • Opportunities to attend the Summer of Code seminar series
  • Visibility:
    • Be a part of all of the Summer of Code promotions – media, website etc.
  • Networking:
    • Meet and collaborate with some of the smartest companies in Wellington

Goals of the Summer of Code

  • Connect students with innovative companies.
  • Help companies find people to work on their R&D projects.
  • Use government funding to help subsidise the cost of the R&D work.
  • Provide an accelerated learning environment using seminars and workshops to increase the learning of the students.
  • Give students more exposure to real world and real-world development practices.

What’s new in 2007?

  • Workshops: We are introducing a new seminar series of workshops to help students get more indepth on technical topics
  • Open source projects: We will be sponsoring a number of open source projects this year to help give back to the open source community.
  • Sponsorship: We’re actively engaging sponsors to be a part of Summer of Code 2.0. The sponsorship will be used to help create bigger and better seminars and events for the Summer of Code.

What now ?

We’re accepting enquiries from companies, speakers and sponsors interested in being a part Summer of Code 2.0. The programme is limited to 20 companies, so if your company would like to be apart of Summer of Code 2.0, email John for more details.

Awesome. Looking forward to the seminars which I will try sneak to, even though I won’t officially be part of the summer of code this year.
